About Valerian Fibres
I’m Valerie Jukes, an artisan mask-maker and founder of Valerian Fibres, creating unique, handcrafted needle-felted fantasy and animal masks.

My journey with wool began 36 years ago when I moved to Bradford on Avon and took part in the 1990 community play, which celebrated the town’s rich woollen heritage. That experience sparked a lifelong fascination with wool, leading me to learn hand-spinning and, years later, to discover the magic of needle-felting.

From the moment I first witnessed wisps of wool transformed into tangible forms, I was hooked. Wool’s versatility never ceases to amaze me, and I see my creative process as a collaboration with this incredible natural material. Most of my masks start with locally sourced wool that I wash and process by hand, ensuring each piece has a unique and personal touch.

Mask-making is an addictive craft—every face I create is truly one of a kind. Whether inspired by animals, folklore, or pure imagination, each mask has its own personality, and I love seeing how people connect with them in different ways.

I craft masks for role-play, festivals, and wall displays. Each piece features a special mounting pad containing the creature’s eyes, which can be removed for wearing or left in place for display. This means you can both bring the mask to life and enjoy it as a striking piece of wall art.

Creating animal masks presents a unique challenge: how to capture a realistic animal expression while adapting it to human proportions. The result is something truly special—a mask that blends artistry and wearability.
